Small Batch Coffee break

Grabbing a moment in a busy family weekend.

Wooden sign reading “SMALL BATCH” hanging on a brick wall by a metal chain.

Took a sneaky half hour out for myself this morning. After I‘d dropped my youngest off at Brownies, I whipped along the coast to one of the few remaining Small Batch Coffee cafés.

  • Notional agenda: buy pods for work and coffee beans for home
  • Real agenda: vegan croissant and long black
A sidewalk signboard for “Small Batch Coffee Roasters” stands near a crosswalk, displaying the message “Cafe Open Today” in bold white letters on a black background. The sign also features a “Great Taste” award logo. In the background, there is a road, a fence, an industrial area with large storage buildings, and a sign offering “50% off your first 2 months” at a gym.

A glorious morning for it. For the first time in months, sitting outside seemed realistic.

I've been learning a lot about the value of “self-care” over the last few months, as part of some therapy. I still don't like the phrase, but the idea behind it is valuable.

And so, today's wee moment of self-care was a drive along a coastal road in the spring sun, a coffee, a croissant, and some good reading.

And the promise of more self-care to come:

A close-up shot shows two packages of coffee on a wooden surface. On the left is a white bag labeled "KENYA SASINI ESTATE" in a bold, sans-serif pink font. Below this, in smaller black text, it reads "ROASTED BY HARRISON" and "ROASTED ON 14/03/25". Above the Kenya label, the bag features a circular logo with three stylized black coffee beans and the words "SMALL BATCH COFFEE ROASTERS" encircling them.
Why yes, I do like African coffees. Why do you ask?
